. Republicans fire the Senate's research director. (10/05/01)
JEFFERSON CITY - The Senate Administration Committee has fired the Senate's research director, Dr. David Valentine, who had worked for the Senate for 24 years.

The decision was made in a closed-door meeting of the committee after Valentine had distributed to a few senators a memo about a GOP idea to reorganize the Senate research staff into partisan staff.

Earlier this year, Senate Republicans were attacked by Democratic members for a GOP idea to eliminate various staff positions after Republicans had captured control of the Senate.

. Planned Parenthood to close Fulton clinic (10/05/01)
JEFFERSON CITY - Because funding has been withheld, Planned Parenthood can no longer afford to keep their Fulton clinic open.

The patients from Fulton can go to the Jefferson City clinic to receive care. Planned Parenthood blames legislators for voting against abortion rights.

    . University of Missouri-Columbia "deeply regrets" that policy banning patriotic symbols on KOMU-TV caused offense (10/04/01)
    JEFFERSON CITY - University of Missouri-Columbia Chancellor Richard Wallace issued a statement Thursday that said MU "deeply regrets" that its policy banning KOMU reporters from wearing patriotic symbols may have caused offense.

    . Security measures beefed up for hazardous waste transport (10/04/01)
    JEFFERSON CITY - Inspections of the transport of hazardous materials are being stepped up this week, said state officials.

    A spokesman for Missouri's hazardous waste management commission stated that a special investigation of the truckers' licenses, citzenship and employment history will be looked into, among other things.

    Waste oil and industrial byproducts transported by trucks could pose serious health and environmental threats in the hands of the wrong person.

    JEFFERSON CITY - Gov. Bob Holden announced that he will illuminate the Capitol dome in pink to honor Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

    . Senate Administration Committee votes for budget cuts (10/03/01)
    JEFFERSON CITY - The Senate Adminstration Committee approved a plan to cut up to 10 percent of the Senate's budget.

    The cuts will come from not filling open vacancies and reducing expenses and equipment.

    . The Doe Run smeltering plant in Herculaneum is under close watch by Missouri's Department of Natural Resources. (10/4/2001)
    JEFFERSON CITY - High lead levels found during testing in August prompted the Natural Resources Department to issue an order to clean up the Doe Run smeltering plant in Herculaneum, Missouri.

    . Secretary of State Matt Blunt is preparing to leave for active service in the Navy for an undetermined length of time. (10/03/01)
    JEFFERSON CITY - Secretary of State Matt Blunt was activated by the Navy Tuesday morning.

    However, Blunt feels that he is leaving the State Department in good hands under the Executive Deputy Secretary of State Dan Ross.

    . Missouri corrections officers try to break up union (10/03/01)
    JEFFERSON CITY - In an attempt to break up union control, more than 60 percent of Missouri's state corrections officers filed a petition Wednesday to de-certify their department's union.

    This comes after months of debate concerning the issue of Gov. Bob Holden's executive order that allows unions to seek approval to collect fees from non-union state government workers.

    The fair share fee issue has been a sticking point for non-union members, but union spokesman Buddy Maupin stated that fair share fees would not be sought by the union.

    JEFFERSON CITY - According to the state Health Department flu vaccinations will cost more than double this year.

    . Attorney General announces 48 gas stations will pay for price gouging (10/02/01)
    JEFFERSON CITY - Jay Nixon announced that all the stations his office had found boosted prices too high had agree to make the payments to his office.

    Stations who had charged more than $2.49 per gallon had been threatened with legal action unless they paid at least $1,000 to the attorney general's office.

    . Economic Development Department hears testimony on cutting tax credits (10/01/01)
    JEFFERSON CITY - The Missouri Economic Development Department heard public testimony Monday on how to cut $7.5 million of tax credits due to state budget shortfalls.

    The department will accept written testimony until Oct. 10, and expects to make a decision later this fall.
