. Republicans see crowded field in governor's race (11/22/02)
JEFFERSON CITY - Still excited from their wins on election day, Republicans are expecting to have a variety of strong candidates in the next race for governor, in 2004. Secretary of State Matt Blunt, Congressman Kenny Hulshof, Senate President Pro Tem Peter Kinder and House Speaker-designate Catherine Hanaway are all expected to at least show an interest in the position.

None of the candidates has expressed an official statement on the issue, but one political expert gives Blunt the upper hand.

. The Cardinals get state funds for a new stadium. (11/19/02)
JEFFERSON CITY - The St. Louis baseball Cardinals got from the governor's administration what it could not get from the legislature -- state funds to help construct a new ballpark.

But they got a lot less and they money will have to be paid back in 29 years.

The Missouri Development Finance Board approved $28.5 million for the stadium project in business-tax exemptions that can be sold to businesses. The money has to be paid back to the state within 29 years, without interest, or the state will get part ownership of the stadium.

Earlier this year, the legislature had considered a $100 million bond issue for the stadium -- a plan that would have cost the state another $100 million in interest on the bonds, for a total cost of $200 million during the 20 year period of the bonds.

The Finance Board's action does not require legislative approval.
