End of "marathon" transfer school hearing addresses concerns

Date: March 5, 2014
By: Hanna Battah
State Capitol Bureau

Intro:
Measures to save under performing schools at a house hearing Wednesday prompted concerns that successful districts could be harmed.
RunTime:  0:37
OutCue:  SOC

Wrap: Missouri National Education Association spokesperson Otto Fajen warned representatives about a provision that bases accreditation ranking by each building, rather than district.

Fajen says successful districts-- like Columbia-- have been able to self-correct for under performing individual schools and don't need state assistance.

Actuality:  COMO.WAV
Run Time:  00:12
Description: The idea of scaling up intervention in response directly to a building, certainly at those levels, think twice about stepping in before the district has a chance to respond.

The committee made no immediate action on the bill.

Reporting from the state Capitol, I'm Hanna Battah.
