Intro:
If you buy your car in another state, you would still have to pay the Missouri sales tax if the state Senate gets its way

Wrap: A bill to replace the current use tax with a sales tax passed the Senate floor twenty eight to zero.

Now the bill moves to a House committee before it can be voted for on the House floor.

Republican House Speaker Tim Jones says this bill is better than the one that Governor Jay Nixon vetoed last year.

Description: "I like it a lot better than last years proposal. It takes out one of the largest problems with the bill which was the retroactivity provision, and it also lets the people weigh in."

The bill last year would have taxed everyone that had previously bought a car out of state, but this year's version removed that language.

Even if you don't buy your car from a Missouri auto-dealer, you would have to pay the Missouri sales tax if things go the Senate's way.

Wrap:The Senate voted twenty eight to zero to pass a bill that changes the state use tax to a sales tax.

Governor Jay Nixon vetoed a similar bill last year because it taxed those who had already purchased cars, but this years version will only tax future purchases.

Republican House Speaker Tim Jones says he is willing to work with the bill if the Governor is.

Run Time:  00:10
Description: "This is a huge problem in all of our border communities. It's one that I'm glad the Governor is working with us on. And this has been a true bipartisan effort."

The sales tax would not only apply to cars bought out of state, but also to sales from friends or neighbors who aren't state auto-dealers.
