Intro:
Senator Dan Brown's gun safety bill was stripped of its ammo after he agreed to an amendment on the Senate floor Tuesday.
RunTime:  0:41
OutCue:  SOC

Wrap: Pressure from Democrats caused Brown to agree to change his bill that would have required gun education for first-graders and active-shooter training for teachers.

The bill now offers schools a choice instead of giving a mandate.

Republican Senator Mike Parson questions if the bill actually does anything now.

Actuality:  PARSON.WAV
Run Time:  00:09
Description: "Do the schools...do we need the bill? I guess what I'm saying is if you say may, can they not do that now?"

Brown says he agreed to change the bill because it wouldn't pass, and he wanted to keep the discussion open.

The Senate endorsed the measure, but it needs another vote before moving to the House.

Wrap: Republican Senator Dan Brown agreed to change his bill that would have required gun safety classes for first graders and active-shooting training for teachers.

Now, instead of requiring, the bill would give schools the option.

Brown says he agreed to change the bill because of strong opposition from Democrats.

Actuality:  BROWN.WAV
Run Time:  00:08
Description: "Well it was obvious, pretty obvious, that they weren't going to let it go as it was, and I'm not understanding their thinking."

Republican Senator Mike Parson says the bill lost significance with the changes.

The Senate gave first-round approval to the measure, but it still needs another vote before moving to the House.

Wrap: Bill sponsor Senator Dan Brown agreed to an amendment that changed the bill from requiring gun safety classes for first-graders and shooting training for teachers to giving the schools the choice.

Democratic Senator Maria Chappelle-Nadal says her amendment is better for more districts.

Actuality:  CHNAD.WAV
Run Time:  00:07
Description: "I think this is a good compromise, and I know that every community is different, and we have different concerns."

Brown says he disagrees with the changes, but agreed to them so the bill could move on.

The Senate endorsed the measure, but another vote is needed before the bill moves to the House.
