JEFFERSON CITY - The office that regulations securities would be stripped from the Secretary of State's office under the task force plan.
Under the reorganization proposal adopted by the task force Thursday, securities regulation would be merged into a broader business-regulation unit under the governor's executive branch.
The proposal had been opposed by the Democratic Secretary of State, Robin Carnahan. The task force was appointed by the Republican governor, Matt Blunt.
The panel also proposed making the commissioner of the Education Department and the commissioner of the Higher Education Department directly answerable to the governor.

JEFFERSON CITY - Government control over medical-industry expansion would be eased under a plan before Gov. Matt Blunt's government review commission.
The commission is expected to conclude its evaluation of the state's executive branch Thursday with votes on 102 proposals, including a suggestion to cut much of Missouri's medical expansion regulation program.

JEFFERSON CITY - A spokersperson for the largest electric utility provider in Missouri raised the possibilty that this month's shut down of the state's only nuclear power facility will lead to an electric rate increase.
On Sunday, AmerenUE shut down operation of the Callaway County nuclear plant for equipment replacement.

JEFFERSON CITY - All schools in the Columbia Public School District are accepting student evacuees from Hurricane Katrina.
Forty-six students are transitioning into the school system.

JEFFERSON CITY - State Senate Judiciary Committee Vice Chairman Robert Mayer says that since the state does not own the Katy Trail bridge in Boonville, Missouri's Attorney General should not sue the Department of Natural Resources.
Mayer says it's a shame the Attorney General is suing a state department.
The Attorney General's office says it's suing because a state government official can't give away a state asset without approval of the Missouri General Assembly, and without compensation.

JEFFERSON CITY - A judge ruled that Attorney General Jay Nixon can proceed with a lawsuit against the Department of Natural Resources to stop the demolishment of the Boonville Bridge.
Nixon claims that Department Chair Doyle Childers overstepped his legal right when he waived the state's right to use the bridge under a 1987 agreement.
