The Missouri Senate passed a bill to make it a crime for telemarketers to call Missourians who don't want to be called.

The bill would force the Attorney General to make a list of Missourians who do not want to be called by telemarketers. Any telemarketer who then calls a person on this list can be fined 5 thousand dollars per call.
How do you get on this list? Jerry Howard is the bill's sponsor.
Tax-exempt, non-profit groups or groups already regulated by the state or federal government. Phone calls initiated by the customer are also exempt.

A bill to make a Missouri do-not-call list for telemarketers weathered a storm of attempted amendments in the Senate.

The bill eventually passed with support from both parties. But, for several hours Republicans and Democrats debated 14 proposed amendments.

The bill would force the Attorney General to create a list of people who do not wish to be called by telemarketers. Telemarketers would then face civil fines if they call people on that list.
The bill is now headed to the House.
