While Governor Carnahan and the leading GOP candidate for his job were in the spotlight, the top Democratic candidate shied from the media.
Renny MacKay has more from Jefferson City.
The day started with the State of the State address by Carnahan.
Republican Senator and governor hopeful, Jim Talent responded to the current governor's plan for the year.
And he didn't pull any punches.
Talent's gubornatorial rival is State Treasurer Bob Holden. He wasn't making any speeches or campaigning on this day.
Holden added that the state economy has improved under Carnahan, especially when compared to the Republican leadership that preceded him.
According to Holden Talent's plans are risky and fiscally irresponsible.

From Jefferson City Renny MacKay has more.
The GOP's top gubernatorial candidate, Jim Talent gave his own State of the State speech Wednesday. Just one hour after Governor Carnahan's own address.
Talent said that it's the Republicans who are addressing the state's top issues and that Carnahan is being unresponsive to the state's needs.
The leading Democrat candidate for governor, Bob Holden frowned on Talent's actions.
Holden said he chose to keep out of the spotlight because the day belonged to Carnahan.
