The 1990 Census Missed 32 000 Missourians Half of Those are from St. Louis

Friday, the Complete Count Committee will be putting on a "Census Circus" for 1 thousand St. Louis head start students.

The event is designed to promote the census to get a more accurate count of St. Louis residents.

Renny MacKay in Jefferson City explains why an accurate count is important to St. Louis.

Evaluations of the 1990 census show Missouri undercounted its residents by 32 thousand.

The Secretary of State's Communication Director, Jim Grebing, says half of those people were from St. Louis, and programs like the Circus will help deal with the census's other problems.

The 1990 undercount cost the city of St. Louis 100 million dollars in funding.

After missing 32 thousand Missourians in the 1990 the census, officials are working to get an accurate count. Especially in St. Louis.

Renny MacKay has more from Jefferson City.

Half of the people missed by the 1990 census lived in St. Louis... that error cost the city 10 million dollars a year.

Missouri Secretary of State's Communication Director is Jim Grebing. He says the state is working hard to get a more accurate count this year.

The bureau is working with minority churches and homeless shelters more this year than in the past.

According to Grebing it is low income citizens and minorities that are most often missed by the census.
