Local law enforcement will not be reimbursed from the state

JEFFERSON CITY - Local law enforcement will not receive reimbursement from the state for having resources in Ferguson since Aug. 9.

Communications Director at the Department of Public Safety, Mike O'Connell, said Governor Nixon has allocated $4 million in the budget to cover National Guard responses, which he believe will be more than enough.

"The Governor put $4 million into his budget for this fiscal year to handle Guard deployment and activations, and there's $3.4 million in appropriated for the state agency expenditures in response to disasters in this current fiscal year, so that's where the money will come from and we believe that will be absolutely plenty of money to cover it," O'Connell said.

As for Ferguson, and St. Louis City and County expenditures, O'Connell said the state is not responsible for picking up that cost.

"Those are handled themselves, the state doesn't pay for those," O'Connell said.

The bill for the law enforcement supplied by the City of Ferguson and St. Louis County is their responsibility to pay, O'Connell said.

"Well, it's just like the state, the state isn't asking anybody for reimbursement. I don't think that they're asking anyone for reimbursement, it's the cost of doing business," O'Connell said.

The final totals will not be known until all police activity has subsided.
