Missouri Lawmakers One Vote Away From Overriding Gun Bill Veto

Date: September 11, 2013
By: Hanna Battah
State Capitol Bureau

Intro:
Only one vote separated lawmakers from overriding a nationally publicized veto that would strip law enforcement officials of the ability for enforce federal gun laws.
RunTime:  0:40
OutCue:  SOC

Wrap: Missouri Republican leaders, Senators Tom Dempsey and Ron Richard went against party lines and voted to sustain a veto for a bill that would nullify federal gun laws.

The gun bill garnered exactly enough support to escape the House, but when the bill reached the Senate, Republican handler brian Nieves spent most of his time attacking Attorney General Chris Koster.

Actuality:  NIEVES4.WAV
Run Time:  00:08
Description: You Democrats might wanna think about that because when it's politically expedient for him to be a Republican again, guess what he's going to be? A Republican.

In a post House veto session press conference, Governor Jay Nixon said this law was designed to be unconstitutional, unsafe and unnecessary.

Description: This is the most dishonest, disingenuine argument I have ever seen against any bill. Yet, Mr. President, it has been very effective. My hat is off to you Attorney General Chris Koster.
