Date: October 15, 2010
By: Erica Coghill
State Capitol Bureau

Intro:
In Today's Auditor debate, Tom Schweich accused Missouri's current auditor, Susan Montee of strategically releasing audits to help her campaign. Erica Coghill has more from Lake Ozark.
RunTime:  0:42
OutCue:  SOC

Wrap:  With the campaign cycle in full motion, current auditor Susan Montee still continues to file audits unlike her predecessor, Claire McCaskill.

Tom Schweich accused Montee's recent audits of being politically motivated.

He recalled a previous speech where Montee admitted to frontloading.

Actuality:  MON4.WAV
Run Time:  00:16
Description: "I had just got done saying I am doing everything the same way as I have always have and then, um, I made a joke that said, maybe I'll frontload a few. It was looked at as a joke and unfortunately I am an accountant and I've forgotten that I'm not funny."

Montee insisted her comments were made as a joke and said she still needs to do her job as auditor while campaigning.

Intro:
With an absent third candidate, current state auditor Susan Montee and opponent Tom Schweich had the floor at today's only auditor debate. Erica Coghill has more from Lake Ozark.
RunTime:  0:40
OutCue:  SOC

Wrap:  Candidate Charles Baum's name tag remained at the podium, but he was a no-show, leaving more room for current auditor Montee and opponent Schweich to debate.

Former CPA, Montee says a state auditor should have accounting experience.

Schweich argued his former investigative skills are key tools for fighting fraud and theft and accused Montee of contradicting herself.

Actuality:  SCHWE.WAV
Run Time:  00:11
Description: "My opponent said in 2006 that you don't have to be a CPA to be auditor, that's when Claire McCaskill was running and she was an auditor, Kit Bond wasn't a CPA, John Ashcroft was not a CPA and I thought they all did an excellent job as auditor."

Scweich said in 2006, Montee also turned down a proposal requiring the state auditor to be a CPA.

Intro:
The senate candidates participated in a full on ugly debate at Lake Ozark today. Erica Coghill has more from the Ozarks.
RunTime:  0:45
OutCue:  SOC

Wrap: The senate candidates tried, but had some trouble answering one question in particular at the debate- what good things can you say about each other?

Starting with Jerry Beck, he says Mr. Blunt is a very handsom man, Mrs. Carnahan is a beautiful woman and Dine is a nice person.

Governor Blunt has a harder time, diverting from the question and thanking all of the candidates for participating in the election process.

Things get even more heated when Carnahan tries to say something nice about Blunt.

Actuality:  CARN2.WAV
Run Time:  00:09
Description: "When he was here in Missouri, he was a terrific public servant, he did a lot of good things for us, which is to me, I'm disappointed that it hasn't worked out the same way in Washington."

Dine tops it all off by saying Carnahan and Blunt are good fundraisers.
