Wrap: Secretary of State Robin Carnahan's suggestion came during a response to a question about her views on gay marriage.

Carnahan also said she believes marriage should be between a man and a woman.

In a follow-up interview Thursday, Carnahan's campaign press secretary Linden Zakula dodged questions about Carnahan's response.

Description: I think her quote speaks for itself. You know, it's something that each state should consider, that they should retain the right you know to define marriage as they see fit without any interference from the federal government.

Carnahan was speaking to Missouri law students about other campaign issues, and a student prompted the gay marriage discussion.
