Bill that would ban Planned Parenthood from sex education classes draws criticism

One Missouri lawmaker wants to change the way sex education in schools is run in public schools. Josh Kranzberg explains the changes from the state Capitol.

St. Charles Representative Cynthia Davis has proposed a bill that would prohibit abortion providers from sponsoring sex education. She says there is a conflict of interest for sponsors like Planned Parenthood providing information and material for sex education classes.

Contents: "It's a step in the protection of public safety, health and welfare. And it's prudent for us to behave in a manner that's gonna really serve the public, not to serve a special interest group that makes their money off funding and providing abortions.

But some concerned citizens traveled to the Capitol to get signatures for a petition against the bill. David Raffle,who helped organize the petition, says he wants his children to get the most accurate information possible.

Contents: "I personally want the best teachers, the best resources for our schools, and if that includes access to Planned Parenthood, professionals as teachers, then so be it."

Contents: "This is a big step in terms of strengthening the family. If we have stronger families, we're gonna have a stronger community. If we have a stronger community, we'll have a stronger state. So I'd like to ask, what is the problem?

The problem, David Raffle says, is Planned Parenthood and other services like it provides much needed information to students on pregnancy and STD prevention.

Contents: "Prevention, planning, preemption is critical here. The demands on the health care industry and health care resources are tremendous as it is, and if we can be more preventative in nature, that would be fantastic."

Davis says having Planned Parenthood in the classroom is a conflict of interest.
