State Auditor Claire McCaskill says the cost of going to public college in the state of Missouri is too high.

The audit her office issued states that while Missouri's average tuition increase was the lowest among the Big 12 states in the last three years, the average amount charged was the highest, at $5,829.

McCaskill says 2004 was the turning point and a sad year for Missouri students.

Actuality:  MCC06.WAV
Run Time: 00:14
Description: "Used to be that colleges received more of their funding from the state than from tuition payments.  Now it's the other way around.  They receive more money from tuition than from the state support because of cuts in higher education budgets."

The audit called for the Department of Higher Education to reanalyze programs spending at colleges statewide.
