Missouri police call on legislators for help

The Missouri police are asking lawmakers for protection.

The president of the Missouri Fraternal Order of Police testified in support of a bill to block access to information on police officers. The Senate bill sponsored by St. Louis County Senator David Klarich calls on the Department of Revenue to restrict access to files on full time certified police officers.

The files contain the addresses, dates of birth and social security numbers of police officers.

Thomas W. Mayer, a 20 year veteren police officer in St. Charles County says this issue came to a head recently.

The Senate Transportation Committee votes on the bill tomorrow morning.

The Transportation committee heard testimony from police officers about the dangers of having their personal information available to the public. That danger spawned St. Louis County Senator David Klarich to sponsor a bill restricting the Department of Revenue from releasing files on Missouri police officers.

Last year the wife of a slain St. Louis policeman received threats in the mail, but her address wasn't available to the public. The culprit got her address through her dead husbands files.

Now, the Missour Fraternal Order of Police is calling on the Missouri legislature to close those files.
