The Deadline for the Bill to Start Funding for a New St. Louis Baseball Stadium is Fast Approaching

The deadline to get things rolling for a new Cardinals stadium this year is just one week. This according to the co-sponsor of the bill to build a new stadium in St. Louis.

Kansas City Representative, Henry Rizzo is the co sponsor of the bill and also the chair of the Commerce Committee... The same committee that passed the bill than a month ago.

Rizzo said he put the bill on the calander last week and gave the bill priority. But he says the bill's time is limited.

Contents: He says if the bill is debated on the floor within one week then it has a good chance of passing.

The bill's fate now lies in the hands of the Speaker of the House. The Speaker decides which bills reach the floor, and with only one month left, there is not enough time to hear that many more bills.

A controversial plan to provide public funding for a new Cardinals' stadium may never see a vote in the state capitol this year.

The co-sponsor of the bill and chair of the committee that passed the bill is Henry Rizzo. He says the bill doesn't stand much of a chance of passing this year if it isn't put on the floor for debate within a week.

But, he says anything could happen.

Contents: Rizzo says it has been a strange year, in which a bill can get onto the governor's desk within a week, or else be within two days of his desk and then fail.

The fate of the bill now lies with the House Speaker. He'll decide if it comes up for debate on the House floor.

A St. Louis County Representative is calling the House proposal for funding of the new Cardinals' stadium a welfare handout.

Republican Representative Jim Murphy from Crestwood is against the House proposal to allow a new stadium in St. Louis.

Murphy has even made an offer to buy the Cards from the current owners. He says he is concerned about the loss of tax money from ticket sales that would be used to fund the new stadium.

Murphy says the proposal is a way for the owners, who went to school in St. Louis, to socialize their losses and privatize their profits.

Contents: Murphy says Jesse James would be proud of the three owners, and he's proposing to put up a Jesse James monument to the boys on the grounds of the Country Day School.

Proponents say their plan is about the comfort of fans and it is up to the city to decide if a new stadium would be beneficial.
