Lobbyists for car manufacturers and auto dealerships are locking horns and fighting for votes this week in Jefferson City. Lee McGuire has more from the state capital.
St. Louis County Senator John Schneider's bill is at the center of an ongoing fight between auto manufacturers and car dealers over just who can own those franchises.
The car dealers say automakers shouldn't be able to own a stake in any dealerships--they say that would create a monopoly on car sales.
But Jim Russell, a lobbyist for the car manufacturers, says this bill is like a punch in the stomach:

Lobbyists for the auto industry are pushing for support in Jefferson City this week, as a bill that would change the relationship between manufacturers and their dealers heads toward a Senate vote. Lee McGuire has more from the state capitol.
St. Louis County Senator John Schneider's bill would prohibit auto manufacturers from owning any part of a car dealership.
Sam Barbee is a lobbyist for those dealerships. He says if automakers start to sell their own cars, they'd create a monopoly:
But a representative for the car manufacturers says the Missouri legislature doesn't have the authority to make these kinds of laws.
He said it could violate interstate commerce laws. That means that if the bill passes, carmakers might try to fight it in court. IN Jefferson City, Lee McGuire, KMOX News.
