Lawmaker wants to keep bondsmen in check

A Missouri lawmaker presented a plan to keep bounty hunters in check to a House committee today/Tuesday. Lee McGuire reports from Jefferson City.

For three years, Kansas City Democratic Representative Marsha Campbell has pushed bills that would require bail bondsmen be licensed.

This time, she says, her plan might make it through.

Campbell says most bounty hunters don't bother anyone, except fugitives.

But a few go too far, and state licensing would keep that cowboy attitude under control. Her bill would also force bail bondsmen to have insurance and be trained. One bountyhunter told a House Committee those restrictions would force him out of business.

George Dodge runs a bail bonds company oversees bountyhunters all over the state. He says that's not a bad idea:

Dodge says some bountyhunters have a cowboy mentality that a licensing plan would keep under control.
