Some Missouri Drivers May Get to Skip Annual Auto Inspections

February 10, 1998

A compromise may be under way in the Senate that would waive annual auto inspections for new cars, but still keep safeguards in place for older cars. Caroline Noel has that story from the Capitol.

Senator Graves' original bill called for annual auto inspections to be waived for ALL cars. But his proposal alarmed at least one leader, St. Louis County Senator Schneider who worried about the safety of old cars.

Contents: "You don't understand the number of cars out there with 50,000, 100,000 miles out there. If there not inspected every year you've got problems."

In the face of opposition, Graves quickly relented, introducing an amendment for auto inspections to occur every three years. Schneider held firm, however, that older cars still need annual inspections.

The bill has not yet reached a vote. For KMOX News this is Caroline Noel.
