Missouri Senators have their sights set on Hawaii, but it has nothing to do with the upcoming summer break. Kimberly Lohman has this report from Jefferson City.

The Hawaii Supreme Court is close to deciding on a case that could legalize same sex marriages.

MU law professor Carl Esbeck says under the U.S. Constition, if Missouri doesn't beef up its statutes, the state would have to recognize same sex marriages performed in other states.

Republican Senator Peter Kinder is sponsoring a bill to make Missouri's public policy clear -- it promotes the institution of marriage between a man and a woman, but does not recognize same sex marriages.

Kinder says that government plays an essential role in preserving the family foundation.

The bill must gain Senate and House approval before it goes to the Governor. Few senators have vocalized opposition to the bill, and Carnahan says if the bill comes to his desk, he'll sign it.
