Mule OKed for Libertarians

August 27, 1996
By: Tracy Sadeghian

Missourians will see a new symbol for the Libertarian Party in the voting booth this fall, and that may confuse some people. Tracy Sadeghian (Su-deeg-in) has more on that story.

The Secretary of State has given Missouri's Libertarian Party the green light to switch its ballot symbol from a liberty bell to a mule.

The new symbol looks much like a donkey...already used by the National Democratic Party.

The switch has flattened the ears of some Missouri democrats.

Richard Lamb is the Political Director of the Statewide Democratic Party...he suggests the Libertarians are just trying to confuse Missouri voters by putting a familiar symbol by their name.

Missouri doesn't usually allow similar party symbols... but because Missouri Democrats use the Statue of Liberty on state ballots, the donkey and mule will not appear together.
