"We need someone who plays chess instead of checkers. Victor is a chess player. Strategy is going to play a key part in this session. What looks like a simple move in checkers is two moves down the road in chess. He's pragmatic and a tough negotiator," said Wes Shoemyer, D-Clarence.
When Governor Matt Blunt pushed for the sale of MOHELA assets in 2006 to pay for new construction for Missouri's public universities, some representatives, like Democrat Wes Shoemyer, were enraged:
Monroe County Democratic Senator Wes Shoemyer opposes the repeal of the limit and says it doesn't follow the wishes of Missouri citizens who voted 3 to 1 in favor of these limits in 1994.
"Well, I think it got Schaafted," said Sen. Wes Shoemyer, D-Clarence who voted for Insure Missouri. "Any expansion of health care I support. The good part of it not passing is I truly believe there is a better plan we can come out with," Shoemyer said , referring to better spending of Federal money.
Sen. Wes Shoemyer, D-Clarence, said that going from a public insurance type to a private insurance type may create problems. The senator said he is concerned that people will not be able to get care from the same providers.
"All those values and all those great ideas mean nothing unless there is meaning behind those three little words," said Sen. Wes Shoemyer, D-Clarence, as he unlined "subject to appropriations" on the bill. "Your values and priorities meet where your dollars are at," he said, adding he would not vote against the bill but doubts it would be funded.
Sen. Wes Shoemyer, D-Clarence, said his district north of Columbia has been hit particularly hard by the flu. "In northeastern Missouri there has been a tremendous amount of the flu. We've actually had some school districts that have closed down in response to the absentee level."
