"I ran into many voters who thought they were voting to ban felons from receiving pension benefits," Sen. Victor Callahan, D-Jackson County said Tuesday night. Callahan said the ballot language was deceptive because the first three paragraphs of the ballot language don't address that the amendment is about is pay raise. " I know some voters were horrified when they told me that they had voted for it, they had no idea that was in there."
Sen. Victor Callahan (D-Jackson County), who has been a staunch opponent to both Amendment 7 and pay raises for elected officials, said that he also plans to make a case against the plan in legislature. He argued that putting legislators in charge of their own pay raises is "putting the foxes in charge of the hen house."
Certain Democratic senators, including Kansas City area native Victor Callahan, argued that the budget included too little resources for Missouri's needy.
In other debate, Sen. Victor Callahan, D-Independence, challenged universities' needs for "shiny new buildings politicians can have their names on." The state should focus on using student loan money to ensure middle-class families accessibility to higher education.
"I'm very concerned that without checking with the legislature, and without going through the people's legislature, that this governor has chosen to modify his proposal to shove pork in the barrel because of his sagging poll numbers," said Sen. Victor Callahan, D-Jackson County.
MOHELA, the government agency that underwrites student loans, needs to raise $450 million dollars to foot the bill for the Governor's plan for capitol improvements and scholarships at state universities. To do that, MOHELA plans to sell off half its assets to a private lender. Governor Blunt touted the plan as a win-win for everybody involved but Senator Victor Callahan of Independence isn't convinced. He says the plan is a risky move.
