Republican Representative and House Judiciary Chair Stanley Cox from Sedalia has proposed a bill that would eliminate the commission and those recommended sentences.
The bill's sponsor -- Rep. Stanley Cox, R-Sedalia and chair of the House Judiciary Committee -- acknowledged that the information required by his bill already is being reported.

The bill, sponsored by Rep. Stanley Cox, R-Sedalia, would abolish a commission that has been working since 1993 to advise the state's justices of suitable alternatives to incarceration, with a goal of alleviating Missouri's expansive prison population.
Rep. Chris Kelly, D-Columbia, voted yes on the bill. He called the piece of legislation "evolving" and said he believes future versions of the bill will include more of a compromise. Kelly said he is currently working with the chairman of the judiciary committee, Rep. Stanley Cox, R-Sedalia, to "come to a better resolution."
