Representative Tim Meadows is pushing to ban red light cameras in Missouri

After years of debate about red light cameras in Missouri one House Representative has expanded the issue to speed limit cameras. Jamal Andress has more from Jefferson City.

The measure would prohibit any automatic speed limit enforcement systems except in school, work safety, and construction zones.

Meadows says these cameras are an intrusion on residents privacy.

Description: "People are tired of intrusion in their daily lives by big government, by cameras and they wanna see these things banned."

Meadows says in his home district of Jefferson County speed limit and red light cameras have produced more than one million dollars in fines.

In the past, there have been several bills filed to ban automatic red-light enforcement systems.

Wrap: Representative Tim Meadows is the sole sponsor of House Bill 53 which would keep speed limit cameras off the highway.

But Meadows says this Bill is really just a stepping stone to his real goal to prohibit red light cameras all over the state.

Description: "Many of the people, and I'd say probably better than 65 percent of the people I talked to had asked me to get rid of the red light cameras and so what I did, I told them, I pledged to them that I was going to do that."
 
Senator Jim Lembke already has a bill on file to prohibit red light cameras in Missouri.   

Meadows says he looks forward to working across party lines with Lembke to get this bill passed.
