Intro:  State funded college scholarships in Missouri are in for a major overhaul.

Wrap: Missouri house members decided that all students receiving need based scholarships through Access Missouri will get the same amount, regardless of where they go to school, beginning in 2014.  

The process of equalizing funds has been on the agenda for several years.

Representative Jeanie Riddle, a Republican from Mokane, expressed her support for the changes.

Description: "Well the bottom line, and you touched on that, this scholarship program is to follow students. Not the institution. And, the students and their families, we talk about tax payer money going to students in this state. It's a win, win."

After a freeze on in-state tuition went into affect last week, this redistribution of scholarship funds will be a huge benefit to Missouri's public universities.

Wrap: The Missouri House voted Tuesday to make sure that public universities receive the same amount in Access Missouri funding as private colleges.

Many of the need based state funded scholarships have gone to private schools in recent years.

Representative Mike Thompson, a Republican from Maryville, focused in on the central purpose of the scholarship program.

Description: "Nobody is totally satisfied. The public schools feel like the private schools should get nothing and they get the whole amount. The private schools feel like, you know they're not getting the bricks and the mortar and the state support, so they should be getting more. Everybody has a stake. And what we have to remember is, this all goes to Missouri students."

The new funding system starts in 2014.
