Missouri lawmakers excited about new pope

Missouri lawmakers are already expressing their views on the new leader of the Catholic church.

White smoke and ringing bells at the Sistine Chapel indicated that the Catholic Church decided who will be the next pope.

Shortly after the election of the 265th pope, Missouri Catholics are already reacting to the announcement.

German Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, who took the name Benedict XVI, was one of the most conservative cardinals.

St. Louis Senator Harry Kennedy says he balances his strong Catholic beliefs with the beliefs of his constituents.

Joseph Ratzinger was one of the most conservative cardinals in the Catholic church...and now he is the new pope.

St. Louis Senator Jon Dolan says he's happy the chuch has chosen a strong leader like pope John Paul II.

Dolan says he tries to balance his own Catholic beliefs with the beliefs of his constituents.

Contents: As a lawmaker in general, I utilize the great example of John F. Kennedy, in the fact that I represent the people of the 2nd district. And while I have a God and am Catholic, and respect the pope and want to follow church teaching, I have to be very careful about how that manifests itself and not strictly go, as a priest would go, go as a senator who is Catholic would go.

Dolan says it's a joyous day for Catholics and non-Catholics alike.
