Governor Blunt says Jones will be executed

Governor Matt Blunt has said convicted murderer Donald Jones will be executed tonight. Tim Carnahan has more from the state Capitol.

Republican Governor Blunt ruled the execution should take place, despite a recommendation from a parole board that Jones receive clemency.

Donald Jones was convicted in 1994 of killing his grandmother while high on PCP-laced crack cocaine. He and his grandmother's family have been pleading with the governor to stop the execution.

Blunt said the death penalty is in place for society's sense of justice.

Contents: We don't have the death penalty so family's can feel a sense of vengence. We have the death penalty because we believe as a society and a people that some crimes are so horrific the only appropriate punishment is the death penalty.

This is the second time in the past two months that Governor Blunt has acted against a parole board recommendation for clemency.

According to the Associated Press, Jones is awaiting word on an appeal he and his family submitted to the United States Supreme Court.
