Gov. Holden announces tuition relief for college students called to active duty

JEFFERSON CITY - Gov. Holden announced yesterday that Missouri's college students who are called to active duty will receive tuition relief. Students may either opt for a complete refund of tuition and enrollment fees or a grade of incomplete for the semester.

Jack Cardetti, a spokesman for the governor's office said that this resolve has been a law in the state statutes since 1991.

Since many university officials and students were unaware of this law, Gov. Holden wanted to make sure that they knew it had now gone into effect, added Cardetti.

Some local universities, however, say that this policy is nothing new to them.

"MU has always done that for students who are called to active duty," said Joe Camille, the Financial Aid Director for MU.

Camille added that under this policy students can either withdraw from the university and receive a complete refund or take an incomplete for their courses.

Billie Jo Hamilton, the director for Student Financial Aid at Southwest Missouri State also said that the university already had such a policy.

We already had the policy in place for students to withdraw due to military mobilization and receive a 100% fee refund, Hamilton noted.

So far 2500 Missourians have been called to active duty with the Missouri National Guard. It is unknown how many of them are college students.
