Assault on Flag Burners Could Be Legal

Flag burners, beware.

Legislation could allow someone to legally assault anyone who defiles a flag.

Nick Rummell has the story, from Jefferson City.

A bill pre-filed for Missouri's next legislative session might make it legal for a person to use any means -- including assault --to prevent the desecration of an American flag.

Although Rep. Gaskill does not consider this a violation of free speech, other lawmakers have criticized earlier versions of the bill for being too vague.

Gaskill said that the events of Sept. 11 have increased the importance of respect for the flag.
