The Missouri Senate has rejected a Republican sponsored amendment designed to end what is called social promotion in schools.

Karyn Dest reports from Jefferson City.

The Republican amendment would have required the state to fail children who were lagging behind in reading skills by two grade levels.

But Democrats argued for letting schools keep control over the issue.

Jefferson City Democratic Senator Steve Stoll:

Actuality:STOLL
RunTime: 6 seconds
OutCue: "flexibility."
Contents: Stoll says local school districts should be able to make decisions about how to deal with children who are behind in reading.

Stoll is sponsor of a remedial reading program bill that the Republicans attempted to use as a vehicle for a social promotion shut-down.

The bill is still pending in the Senate.

In Jefferson City, I'm Karyn Dest.
