Welfare Reform Passes the Senate

More of Missouri will be going to work as a result of legislation passed in Jefferson City. Rod Petersen has more from the State Capitol.

The Senate approved welfare reform as part of the federally-funded program which states must make law to receive money.

The Senate has been debating the bill for the past week.

Bill sponsor, Joe Maxwell, says that the Senate felt a commitment to move in enacting welfare reform.

Contents: Two thing are important to remember in Missouri. Welfare is gone, doesn't exist anymore. We have work and child support. We have the ability to help individuals find work, be trained for work, but they are going to work.

The bill now goes to the full House for approval.

Welfare reform passed in the Senate will begin to move people from welfare to work.

Under the legislation welfare recipients are limited to five years of total lifetime benefits.

The bill would also require them to begin working within two years.

Contents: I think after we move this group of citizens into the workplace then it gets easier because we don't have the dependency problem that's developed over several generations.
