Senate committee expands family planning funding

April 7, 1997

State Capital Bureau

A Senate committee has rejected the House version of the health department budget that would restrict family planning funding to public agencies. Susan Batt has the details from Jefferson City.

Story:
RunTime:
OutCue: SOC

With a close vote, the committee said any private organization could receive state family planning money. This means that both Planned Parenthood and religious groups would be eligible - but they would not be allowed to use that money to directly fund abortions.

Kansas City Senator Harry Wiggins proposed the changes.

Actuality: Harry Wiggins
RunTime:
OutCue: "...to perform abortions."
Contents: He says that this is the best way to help pregnant terrified teenage girls and homeless women. The funding should not exclude anybody.

The proposed budget would also give money to local health agencies, hospitals and doctors to provide pregnancy testing and prenatal care.

Under the Senate version, private organizations like Planned Parenthood and religious groups could receive money - as long as it is not used to pay for abortions.

Kansas City Senator Harry Wiggins supports the changes.

RunTime:
OutCue: "...way to do it."
Contents: He says he is pro-life but thinks family planning is the only way to do anything about abortion.
