Phone Rates Could Be On The Rise

Missouri phone companies could have more freedom to set rates, under a bill approved by the Senate Wednesday. Kelly Just reports from Jefferson City.

Senators have given preliminary approval to a bill that would cause monthly local phone rates to jump by a dollar-and-a-half.

The measure was voted on after three and a half hours of heated floor debate.

Bill Sponsor, Wayne Goode says he expected lots of discussion on the matter, but says his measure offered the best protection for consumers.

Goode predicts that the increased charges will eventually be made up when long distance phone companies start competing for local service in many parts of Missouri.

Senators also approved an amendment to the bill granting telecommunication discounts to the state's public schools.
