Fraud Charged

The Republican candidate for Missouri state treasurer is accusing the state's incumbent treasurer of fraud. Phill Brooks has the story from Jefferson City:

Republican Carl Bearden stresses he does not mean to suggest any criminal wrong-doing.

Instead, Bearden attacks Democrat Bob Holden for not saying more about that education tax increase passed a few years ago. It was a tax increase Bearden says unfairly took money from the taxpayers.

Contents: Bearden says Holden should have gone public with revenue figures suggesting the tax hike would exceed the Hancock limit.

Bearden also accuses Holden of fraud for making a court-ordered payment for Kansas City school desegregation just after the U.S. Supreme Court called for an end to that case.

But Holden says he was under a lower court order to that make payment.

The campaign for one of Missouri's statewide offices turned a bit nastier Tuesday with the Republican candidate accusing his opponent of committing fraud while in office. Phill Brooks has the story from Jefferson City:

The accusation was made against the state's incumbent treasurer, Democrat Bob Holden.

The Republican challenger, Carl Bearden, concedes Holden did not break the law.

Rather, Bearden's accusation is based on a couple of positions Holden had taken with which Bearden disagrees.
