Governor Mel Carnahan is traveling across the state the first two days of this week to announce a sweeping package to crack down on violence in schools. Phill Brooks has the story from Jefferson City:
Children who assault teachers or other school workers could face felony criminal charges under the governor's proposed package.
Carnahan said no one specific incident prompted his school-violence proposal...but rather, it was the growing pattern of violence in schools:
In addition to tougher penalties against violent students, the governor's package would make it easier for schools to access juvenile court records. And, there would provisions to prevent a student suspended by one school from simply enrolling in another school district.
