Missouri Senate Overrode Governor Jay Nixon's Veto of the school funding formula for St. Louis schools.
RunTime: 0:48
OutCue:  SOC

Wrap: The bill would have changed the funding formula for St. Louis school districts. Nixon said the bill hurts the schools, despite the original formula not being fully funded.

Democrat Maria Chappelle-Nadal from St. Louis County argued that the original formula was not helping and that this bill would benefit St. Louis schools.

Description: His words in the press release were that there would be millions of dollars that would be eliminated. So what we said to that, it's kinda like it's a million dollars you never had right? So actually his logic in all this is based on a fully funded formula which he's been part of not funding and in some cases underfunding.

The override passed in the Senate by a 25 to 7 vote. The bill will now go to the Missouri House.

Wrap: Republican Eric Schmitt from St.Louis County criticized Missouri Governor Jay Nixon's veto.

Schmitt said that he thought that Nixon was playing the Ferguson residents as pawns.

Run Time: 00:19
Description: I have to tell you this to me is truly remarkable that this governor who failed the people of this state, who failed the people of Ferguson; he was absent from the very place that he showed up today to grandstand and veto a bill with Ferguson as a backdrop.

Nixon said  this bill would give cover for legislators to not pay for adequate school funding.

The override was passed 25 to 7 in the Senate and will now go to the Missouri House.

Wrap: Missouri Governor Jay Nixon said passing the bill to change the school funding formula would be to break the promises made to local schools.

Democrat Maria Chappelle-Nadal disagreed saying they had tried to work to find the best solution for all sides.

Actuality:  Chappelle-Nadal.WAV
Run Time: 00:16
Description: Here is my opinion when you are trying to make a compromise you show good faith and you honor the commitment that you made. You honor that commitment because that's how people are going to carry on their business. If nothing else you have your word and he did not keep his.

Chappelle-Nadal then added that this formula would be more beneficial and Nixon vetoing it only hindered the school districts.

The Senate overrode the veto in a 25 to 7 vote and will go to the Missouri House.
