DESE chooses a new Commissioner of Education

The new Commissioner of Education announced they do not have the resources to help with unaccredited and failing school districts.

Wrap: Current Deputy Commissioner for the Division of Learning Services Margaret Vandeven was announced as the new Commissioner of Education.

During a press conference shortly after the announcement Vandeven said that currently there are not enough resources to support the Department of Education's intervention plan.

The Missouri Department of Education's intervention plan is to help schools from falling below the accreditation line and to stop those that are below the line from failing.

Vandeven will begin her term as the sixth Commissioner on January 1st.

In a press conference soon after the announcement Vandeven was asked about what aid could be given to unaccredited districts such as Normandy.

Vandeven cited tuition fixes as a possible solution.

Vandeven also said there needs to be focus placed on attracting the best leaders and teachers to unaccredited school districts.
