House Committee Passes Whistleblower Protection Act

Date: April 16, 2012
By: Matt Evans
State Capitol Bureau
Links: SB 592, HB 2099, HB 1219

Intro:
A House Committee passed a slimmed-down version of a twice-vetoed workplace discrimination bill.
RunTime:  0:37
OutCue:  SOC

Wrap: Before it met the ax, the bill would have required discrimination to be a "motivating" factor for getting fired instead of a "contributing" one.

While the General Assembly has passed two bills doing that, they have both met swift vetoes from Governor Jay Nixon.

The bill now changes protections for whistleblowers, but some like the ACLU's Jeremy LaFaver say the bill takes away protections.

Actuality:  LAFAV1.WAV
Run Time:  00:06
Description: "While it is called the whistleblower protection act, we believe this does less to protect them but current law."

The bill's proponents say it puts Missouri law in line with federal law.
