Wrap: In 2010, Missouri pedestrian deaths totaled 57. Missouri Department of Transportation Outreach Coordinator DeAnne Rickbaugh says pedestrian deaths have significantly increased in the last year.

Actuality:  DEANNE.WAV
Run Time:  00:11
Description: "In the first 3 months of 2011, we have had about as many pedestrian deaths as the entire year of 2010."

In reaction to these statistics, MoDOT is launching a safety campaign which encourages drivers and pedestrians to be more aware of each other.

Rickbaugh suggests that pedestrians gage drivers attentiveness by looking them in the eyes.

Wrap: This year, there has already been 54 pedestrian deaths. This growing statistic is on track to surpass last year's totaled 57 deaths.

MoDOT Outreach Coordinator DeAnne Rickbaugh says MoDOT launched a safety campaign in reaction to this increasing death toll, and will encourage driver-pedestrian awareness.

Actuality:  DEANNE2.WAV
Run Time:  00:14
Description: "It's very important to turn on your flashers and your headlights so that folks can notice your car on the side of the road. If you have a mobile phone, dial star-55 so an officer can come assess the situation and help.

Rickbaugh says pedestrians should be defensive and look drivers in the eyes to gage their attentiveness.

Wrap: In 2011, pedestrian deaths have already reached 54 - on a steady track to surpass last year's total of 57.

MoDot Outreach Coordinator DeAnne Rickbaugh says MoDot launched a pedestrian safety campaign to address the significant increase.

Actuality:  DEANNE3.WAV
Run Time:  00:13
Description: "The safest thing for pedestrians to do is to walk against the traffic. So that means if your headed south, face the northbound traffic... and look at their eyes as drivers approach you."

Rickbaugh says looking drivers in the eyes is the best way to gage drivers' attentiveness to the situation.
