Wrap: The bill proposed by Senate President Pro-Tem Charlie Shields saves Missouri just less than 65 million dollars.

Senators shot down an amendment sacrificing funds for summer schooling and Career Ladder, a program that pays teachers more for extra work.

Senate Minority leader Victor Callahan used a fitting metaphor to justify his defense of summer school education.

Description: "We're talking about seperating out and creating a second entity...well that's like trying to take the core out of the apple with breaking the skin, the summer school was always part of the original formula."

Republican Senator Jason Crowell says doing away with these programs helps to balance Missouri's budget.

The Senate extended the date to vote on the bill.
