Eight months before election day, Republican and Democratic officials are supporting legislation that is unneccesary according to the Missouri Department of Revenue. This year, Missourians can expect a check from the federal government and the proposed bills would make it impossible for Missouri to tax that money. The Missouri Department of Revenue says there is no need for the law. An official from the deparment explained the refunds are not considered income, so they are already exempt from any possible state tax. Senate Minority Floor Leader Maida Coleman says a statement by the Revenue Department is not enough to keep Missourian's money safe.

Description: No department, no bureaucrat wants to be told what to do. So it's easy to say it's not going to be taxed, but I've seen no pledge. They've not written anything down saying we do no intend to tax Missourians.

The House Committee on Tax Reform heard three identical bills about the issue on Tuesday and they expect more next week.

Democrats and Republicans at the State Capitol are supporting legislation that will protect federal tax refunds from any state tax.

The legislators are worried that Missourians will be taxed on the refund checks they receive this year.

Officials from the Department of Revenue say it is already impossible for the refunds to be taxed because they will not be considered income.

Senate Minority Leader Maida Coleman says there is more to the story.

Description: Six pieces of legislation cannot be wrong. We would not be filling legislation if we did not know for a fact that the state has the ability to tax us.
