The State appointed a three-member board in 1998 to take over the school district if the current one was ineffective.

The St. Louis board of education argued to the Missouri Supreme Court that voters should have the right to choose their own school officials.

The Supreme Court Communications Counsel Beth Riggert says the process is just beginning.

Description: The case was submitted for consideration, and the court will consider all the arguments that were made; both at oral argument today and in the written briefs that were filed by all the parties. And it will then reach a decision.

The State says voters knew the appointed board could take over when they voted for the school board.

The St. Louis City School District says a change is needed after the State deemed the district unaccredited.

Missouri Board of Education spokesperson Jim Morris says low academic scores led to the decision.

Run Time: 00:17
Description: We believe that the State Board of Education used a valid process to evaluate the school district the way we evaluate all public school districts in the state. And the decision to de-accredit the St. Louis Public schools was a proper decision.

The school district says the state should let the School Board do its job.
