Cordray says past disasters elicit investigation of gasoline suppliers

Intro: A spokesperson from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources said high gas prices in Missouri could be due to price gouging of oil companies.

Missouri Department of Natural Resources Spokesman Kerry Cordray said there is a likelihood that the price increases seen in Missouri during the last week would likely be short-lived, because of falling crude oil prices and the likely quick return in fuel supplies from the Gulf.

Cordray said prices usually rise because of price gouging after a natural disaster but there are other reasons for localized price increases.

Attorney General Jay Nixon was directed by the governor to head an investigation to put a stop to possible price hiking from gasoline suppliers.

Cordray also said he expects gas prices to go up because of trends after natural disasters.

The MPCA director said there is nothing questionable going on at Missouri's gas pumps. 

Director Leone said he would be more than happy to cooperate with the investigation of gasoline suppliers.

Attorney General Jay Nixon heads the investigation of suppliers for any potential evidence of price gouging.

Leone also said that any time a natural disaster occurs prices are sure to rise and price gouging is never a factor.
