The federal rebate was recently signed by President Bush to help boost the economy.

Similar legislation was heard in 2001 preventing federal rebate checks from increasing residents state income tax, but it did not pass.

Co-sponsor of the bill and Democratic Representative Jason Grill says he is hopeful this time will be different.

Actuality:  GRILL3.WAV
Run Time: 00:10
Description: Hopefully this time around with the economy like it is, we'll be able to get that passed on a bi-partisan basis and I hope that the majority party will work with Representative Holsman and myself to get that done.

If passed, Missouri would join the majority of the rest of the nation that do not place state income taxes on Federal rebates.

The bill has yet to be assigned to a committee for further movement.

Missouri residents might be surprised to know that after they get a federal tax rebate this season, they must give some back to the state.

Democratic Representative and co-sponsor of the bill Jason Grill says the tax exemption is an issue the entire state can rally around.

Actuality:  GRILL7.WAV
Run Time: 00:10
Description: I think it's a Missouri issue we all can support, we all want to see our taxes be fair and lowered, and I think that imposing this on these rebate checks is unfair and it shouldn't happen.

Missouri is one of few states that place income taxes on federal rebates.

The legislation has had no further movement, and is yet to be determined.
