The Missouri House passed a bill that would make it a crime for someone to coerce a woman to have an abortion.

The bill also requires that a woman seeking an abortion consult with the same doctor who will perform it twenty-four hours before the procedure.

Jackson County Democratic Representative Mike Talboy says the political motives of some are getting in the way of women's rights.

Actuality:  TALBOY3.WAV
Run Time: 00:07
Description: I resent the fact that we as a legislature are telling women that they aren't smart enough to make a decision based upon the information that they want.

The bill would make forcing an abortion by already illegal methods, like assault, a more severe classification of crime.

The House passed a bill that would make coercing an abortion illegal in the state of Missouri.

Democratic Representative Mike Talboy is part of the opposition to the bill that says the term 'coerce' is too broad and could hurt both doctors and patients.

Actuality:  TALBOY2.WAV
Run Time: 00:14
Description: One, we need to make sure that we are not making the choices of women that much more difficult by telling doctors what they can say, and telling women what they can and can not base their decision off of.

The bill would require women seeking an abortion to be counseled by the performing doctor at least twenty-four hours before the procedure.

The counseling would include brochures and videos made by bureaucrats rather than medical associations.

A bill that would make the coercion of an abortion illegal was overwhelmingly passed in the Missouri House.

The bill would strengthen the current law requiring patients to talk to a doctor twenty-four hours before the procedure.

Republican Representative Robert Onder says the bill will take pressure off women being forced to go through an abortion.

Actuality:  ONDER4.WAV
Run Time: 00:08
Description: I do think that this gives us one of the stronger informed consent laws in the whole country, and at this point, I think this gives us a very good law.

Opposition to the bill says it takes away from women's rights to have an abortion.
