New Communications System Will Take Years to Create

Intro:  State officials have said emergency communications in Missouri are out of date, yet it may be years before changes are made. Courtney Cox has more from Jefferson City.

Plans are underway to enhance statewide emergency communications, but according to one Missouri official, it is going to take cooperation from local and county governments to fully succeed.
 
Currently, many different radio systems are used throughout the state, making communication difficult in the time of crisis.
 
The new communications system would allow public safety personnel to communicate across organizational boundaries, including law enforcement, fire rescue, and emergency medical services.

Description: "It could take anywhere from three to six or seven years to build a statewide system. At that time we hope that local government would choose to join, but in fact there are potential areas of the state who might say this doesn't fit our requirement or we're not interested, we want to do our own local design."

The plan will be discussed in the next legislative session.

Until the new system is established, direct statewide communication is impossible.
