Missouri's system of issuing driver's licenses already has safeguards to prevent illegal immigrants from getting a driver's license, but Matt Blunt wants to go even further.

Blunt says he'll support legislation making it a criminal offense for an illegal immigrant to obtain a drivers license.

Blunt's spokesperson, Jessica Robinson, says anyone who helps an illegal immigrant acquire a driver's license will have to answer for their actions as well.

Description: It would also impose criminal penalties if someone were to assist an illegal alien in obtaining a driver license.

David Griffith, spokesman for the Missouri Department of Revenue, says with the safeguards already in place, illegal immigrants acquiring driver's licenses is not a problem at all.

David Griffith, the spokesman for the Missouri Department of Revenue which issues driver's licenses, says there is currently no problem as the state already has safeguards in place to prevent illegal immigrants from receiving driver's licenses.

Blunt's spokesperson, Jessica Robinson, says this legislation would be an important addition to the current safeguards.

Actuality:  ROBINSN1.WAV
Run Time: 00:06
Description: There was not a law, there is not a law currently on the books and so the governor is saying it is something that should be part of our, of our, of our state's law.

If adopted, this legislation could give the state tools to prosecute illegal immigrants and anyone who helped them acquire a driver's license.
