Links: SB 284

Intro: The Missouri House voted "Yes" to the cable bill. There were only four "No's" to the bill, one of them came from the House Minority Leader.  Fanna (FAUNA) Haile-Selassie (HIGH-lay-suh-LAH-say) has more from the House Chamber. RunTime:

After several proposed amendments to the cable bill, it was approved in the Missouri House.

The vote was 143 to 4.  Three democrats went against the bill, including the House Minority Leader, Jeff Harris.

The bill essentially gives cable regulation from local companies to large network companies.

Harris stated his concern for the lack of consumer protection.

Description: I think it's tough enough as it is to get a hold of your local cable provider, if you know have a provider for over half the state of Missouri, it's going to make it a little more difficult.

Harris proposed his own amendment that was defeated, but would move the cable control to a la carte cable, which allows consumers to pay for only the channels they want.

House Minority leader Jeff Harris said "No" to the cable bill Wednesday afternoon, but the majority of the House did not agree with him.

The cable bill was passed 143 to 4 to allow large network cable companies to take over many local cable contracts.

Harris voiced his concern for the lack of consumer protection in the bill.

Description: I think there is inadequate protection for consumers and not enough of a way for consumers to be able to contact someone if they have a problem.

Harris proposed an amendment that was defeated to move cable contracts to a la carte cable.

The company would allow the consumer to pay for channels they want individually.
